Nick Gahan

Financial Planner

At work

With almost two decades of experience in financial planning, Nick works closely with clients navigating the complexities of relocating between the UK and Australia. He specialises in areas including pension and superannuation transfers, tax considerations, and long‑term financial planning for retirement in Australia. Nick takes a practical, personalised approach, translating complex regulatory frameworks into clear, actionable strategies that help clients feel confident and in control at every stage of their journey.

Originally from Manchester, Nick has strong roots in the UK, with most of his family still based there. Although he relocated to Perth in 2006, this ongoing connection gives him a genuine understanding of the personal and financial considerations involved when moving between the UK and Australia.

Nick holds a Master of Financial Planning and an Advanced Diploma of Financial Services. He has also completed specialist study in self-managed super funds (SMSFs), gearing and margin lending, and aged care advice, enabling him to provide well‑rounded and thoughtful advice tailored to each client’s circumstances.

When he’s not helping clients make sense of their financial lives, Nick can usually be found fishing on the Swan River with his two sons, coaching under 10’s football, or making the most of Perth’s outdoors through open-water swimming, surfing and bush walking.

Although I have a financial services background, transferring pension assets from the UK to Australia is specialist work, and needs doing 100% right first time. The BDH guys over-delivered with a lot of knowledge, experience and professionalism, which in turn gave me the peace of mind I needed throughout this process.I have absolutely no hesitation in recommending them. BDH exceeded my own high expectations.

They were so responsive and answered all my (sometimes silly) questions. When the pandemic struck and lockdown ensued, they were business as usual and my payment was issued right in the middle of all of that. I have nothing but positives.

Been with them since 1999 and am yet to find anyone more knowledgeable and helpful. Returns have always been ahead of market averages at a very reasonable price. Fair and open with great staff.

Spotlight questions

What’s your best tip for anyone moving to Australia?

Embrace the unfamiliar rather than trying to recreate what you left behind. The instinct is to find the nearest equivalent to home - same routines, same food, same social circles - but the people who settle best are the ones who lean into the difference. I’ve even become a massive fan of the AFL (Aussie Rules football).

What’s the best thing about living in Australia?

The lifestyle in Perth is genuinely hard to beat. It’s a proper city with everything you need, but the Swan River, beaches and open spaces are right on your doorstep. Once you’ve experienced that quality of life day-to-day, it’s very hard to imagine going back.

What do you miss about living in the UK?

The football culture. Nothing quite replicates a proper match day atmosphere - the terraces, the banter, the cold. Perth has a growing football scene and I’m actively involved in it locally, but there’s something irreplaceable about the Premier League on a cold Saturday afternoon.

What gives you the most satisfaction at work?

What drives me most is the peace of mind and confidence I can give clients - knowing they have clarity on their situation and a genuine path to their retirement and lifestyle goals. There’s real satisfaction in cutting through complex strategies, investments and structures so that everything just clicks. And then there are the long-standing relationships built over many years, being a trusted presence through life’s milestones and its ups and downs, that continuity and trust is something I value enormously.

What’s the best thing about working for bdhSterling?

Since joining bdhSterling, what’s stood out most is the culture. From day one I felt genuinely welcomed, not just onboarded. The people here are impressive professionals, but more than that, they’re great humans. There’s a real sense that everyone wants each other to succeed, and that makes a big difference.
