Scott Palmer

Senior Financial Planner

At work

Scott has worked in Financial Services since 2004, building almost two decades of experience in the UK before making the move to Australia in 2023. His passion for financial planning started early – after a visit to a careers adviser at the age of just 14, he knew he wanted a career in finance and investments.

As a Senior Financial Planner, Scott enjoys helping clients make informed financial decisions and achieve their long-term goals. While his interest in investments sparked his career, it’s the relationships he builds with clients and the opportunity to make a positive difference in their lives that he finds most rewarding. Having made the move from the UK to Australia himself, he understands first-hand the personal, financial and practical considerations that come with relocating overseas.

Scott is a Chartered Financial Planner and holds an MA in Global Financial Management and a BA (Hons) in Financial Services.

Outside of work, Scott is rarely standing still. A keen sports enthusiast, he enjoys football, triathlons, trail running and ultra-marathons. Music is another long-standing passion, having played bass guitar in bands for many years. Along the way, he has even performed as Paul McCartney in a Beatles tribute band and DJ’d for Eric Clapton.

Although I have a financial services background, transferring pension assets from the UK to Australia is specialist work, and needs doing 100% right first time. The BDH guys over-delivered with a lot of knowledge, experience and professionalism, which in turn gave me the peace of mind I needed throughout this process.I have absolutely no hesitation in recommending them. BDH exceeded my own high expectations.

They were so responsive and answered all my (sometimes silly) questions. When the pandemic struck and lockdown ensued, they were business as usual and my payment was issued right in the middle of all of that. I have nothing but positives.

For the last three years, I have used bdhSterling to look after my UK pension while waiting to transfer it to Australia. I have found the investment recommendations and advice to be excellent. Communication is effective and financial transactions are undertaken efficiently. Definitely a five-star company.

Been with them since 1999 and am yet to find anyone more knowledgeable and helpful. Returns have always been ahead of market averages at a very reasonable price. Fair and open with great staff.

Spotlight questions

What’s your best tip for anyone moving to Australia?

Whilst we speak the same language, we don’t speak the same language. The way of life is very different so don’t expect to replicate your previous life in your new country. Embrace the change in culture.

What’s the best thing about living in Australia?

The number of accessible sports and recreational activities open to my children is amazing, although standing under the intense sun to watch is not always quite as fun!

What do you miss about living in the UK?

Family and friends, football (not soccer!), the English countryside, pubs, British humour, and decent bacon.

What gives you the most satisfaction at work?

I genuinely enjoy helping people. I get a huge sense of satisfaction from helping clients gain clarity and confidence by explaining something that can seem complicated or intimidating and in a way that makes sense. When a client leaves a meeting feeling less worried, more informed, and confident about their future, I know I've made a meaningful difference. Seeing that positive impact on someone's life is what motivates me every day.

What’s the best thing about working for bdhSterling?

100%, the working culture. There's a strong focus on client service and doing the right thing, but also on creating a supportive team environment. People genuinely help each other, and both individual and team successes are recognised and celebrated. Whether it's achieving a great outcome for a client or supporting a colleague, those contributions don't go unnoticed. It's rewarding to work in an environment where everyone is working towards the same goal and takes pride in each other's achievements.
