Ellen Lewis

Having made the move from Australia to London, Ellen needed help navigating the unique complexities of UK pensions. Here's her story.

Navigating the complexities of UK pensions

My name is Ellen Lewis and I have been dealing with Stephen Ford at bdhSterling for probably about three or four months now. I found bdhSterling when I was looking for financial advisers who specialise in Australian expats, and searched within a Facebook group called ‘Aussies in London’ and saw that other people had recommended them previously.

It was important for us to choose a company that had expertise in finance in Australia and the UK, because both myself and my husband are Australian expats. So I wanted to have someone that had a decent understanding of the tax conditions in Australia and the UK.

The best thing that has come from working with bdhSterling and with Stephen has been the projections that he’s showed us. We were flabbergasted at the earning potential that we had, and that if we made some sound investment options we would be in a considerably better financial position than where we are at the moment. We weren’t quite expecting that result, so I was really, really impressed with the possibilities that we have in the future.

The other thing that I would commend Stephen on is the way that he explains questions. I’m not financial in the way that I think at all, and he was really patient and thorough in terms of explaining different processes and the different opportunities that were available to us, in a way that me as a person (who is financially illiterate to certain extent) was able to understand.

The three words I would use to describe Stephen and bdhSterling are understanding, enjoyable and available. I would tell a friend who may be considering moving from Australia to the UK to seek financial advice before they leave so that they set themselves up in the best way possible. The pension schemes in the UK can be tricky to navigate. And potentially think about any property investments you would want to make within Australia before moving as well.
